Overview
BROMELAIN
Bromelain is a crude extract from the pineapple that contains, among other components, various closely related proteinases, demonstrating, in vitro and in vivo, antiedematous, antiinflammatory, antithrombotic and fibrinolytic activities. The active factors involved are biochemically characterized only in part. Due to its efficacy after oral administration, its safety and lack of undesired side effects, bromelain has earned growing acceptance and compliance among patients as a phytotherapeutical drug. A wide range of therapeutic benefits has been claimed for bromelain, such as reversible inhibition of platelet aggregation, angina pectoris, bronchitis, sinusitis, surgical traumas, thrombophlebitis, pyelonephritis and enhanced absorption of drugs, particularly of antibiotics.
CURCUMIN The use of turmeric, derived from the root of the plant Curcuma longa, for treatment of different inflammatory diseases has been described in Ayurveda and in traditional Chinese medicine for thousands of years. The active component of turmeric responsible for this activity, curcumin, was identified almost two centuries ago. Modern science has revealed that curcumin mediates its effects by modulation of several important molecular targets. Because it can modulate the expression of these targets, curcumin is now being used to treat cancer, arthritis, diabetes, Crohn's disease, cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, Alzheimer's disease, psoriasis, and other pathologies. METHYL SULPHONYL METHANE (MSM) MSM may be effective for the treatment of allergy, pain syndromes, athletic injuries, and bladder disorders. Dietary sulfur-containing amino acids analysis and protein supplementation may be indicated for vegan athletes, children, or patients with HIV, because of an increased risk for sulfur-containing amino acids deficiency in these groups. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM), a volatile component in the sulfur cycle, is another source of sulfur found in the human diet. Increases in serum sulfate may explain some of the therapeutic effects of MSM, DMSO, and glucosamine sulfate. VITAMIN C Vitamin C contributes to many aspects of human health. The main areas of research reviewed include: 1. Vitamin C requirements of smokers. The data indicate that the vitamin C requirement of smokers is higher by at least 60 mg per day (up to 140 mg per day) than that of nonsmokers. 2. Important functions of the body, such as immune response, pulmonary function, and iron absorption are related to vitamin C intakes. Daily vitamin C intake of at least 150-200 mg per day enhance these functions. 3. Vitamin C may play critical roles in the prevention of CHD, cancer and cataract. Based on the available data, vitamin C intakes of at least 80-120 mg per day are associated with lowering the risk of these chronic diseases. 4. The literature documents that these and much higher intake levels of vitamin C are safe. YARROW Yarrow is well-known for its use as a remedy for cold/flu/fever. It is tonifying and anti-inflammatory to the skin and mucus membranes of the stomach and bowels; thus, helpful for varicose veins, gastroenteritis, dysentery, and diarrhea. As a hemostatic, Yarrow helps to stop bleeding of stomach ulcers, hemorrhoids, and for nosebleeds (especially those due to allergies). Yarrow is an ally for women as it helps to tone the uterus and promote balance in their menstrual flow. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, it helps to relieve the dull, achy menstrual pains; it also helps with postpartum bleeding and abnormal flows by acting as a hemostatic.
